How to Reapply After a Rejection

How to Reapply After a RejectionHow to Reapply After a RejectionDont give up Heres how to tweak your resume and try again. She was a senior human-resources professional who was laid off in summer 2009 from her job at large hospital in Texas. After the layoff, she did everything she knew from her years in HR would help her land a job. She woke early every day, put on her business suit, networked like mad, lunched with contacts the whole nine yards.Still, no job offers came just those cold-as-silicon, automatically generated rejection letters. You know the kind vaguely worded, anonymously sent e-mails saying theyve received your application and will contact you if they landsee a fit.Yeah, right. Dont hold your breath. The HR pro didnt. Instead, she contacted Laurie M. Winslow, principal at Talent Innovations Group. Winslow looked at her resume, saw that it did a good job making the case that she was management material, reformatted the document and used the HR pros list of connections un til she found one who knew a senior management member of one of the companies to which she had already applied. She then told the HR pro to resubmit the new resume to all those automatic online application sites. The job seeker did reapply, changing her e-mail address so it wouldnt appear to be a duplicate. She was hired for one of the lokalitts for which she was originally rejected. Was it the contact that did the trick, or was it the reformatted, resubmitted resume? Probably both, but what really matters is that she bounced back, tweaked her resume and reapplied. Its not you, its your resumeWe contacted HR professionals who work with resume applicant tracking systems (ATS), and all of them said the same thing If youve received a computer-generated rejection letter for a position for which you believe you are qualified, you should understand that your resume has been rejected, not you.In such cases, the issue may be that your resume lacks specific keywords and search terms or the form at caused a problem for the software. In that case, Winslow said, a smart applicant will immediately contact the recruitment office of the rejecting organization. If they cannot get through to the appropriate recruiter, I would advise that they speak with a sympathetic administrative assistant - anyone who can guide them as to the best way for them to replace the resume currently in the ATS with one containing the correct keywords and phrases. And once their customized resume has been submitted, I would encourage them to contact the appropriate recruiter (or sympathetic administrative assistant) and request that their updated resume be reviewed for the open position.Read on for more tips about how to tweak a resume and reapply after receiving an automated rejection letter.Best practices for jumping back into the ATSWinslow advises her clients to change the e-mail address they use to submit their applications, since e-mail is the primary identifier used by common ATS software to sort resumes, and changing it will probably convince the ATS its a new application. (More-advanced ATS programs, like Taleo, use multiple candidate identifiers, Winslow said, but multiple applications are totenstill OK, so long as the content remains accurate.)And it doesnt hurt to reach a human on the other side of the ATS. Winslow recommended applicants use LinkedIn or other networking tools to find a contact within the company to whom they can speak about why you think youre a good fit for the position.Dont be afraid to pick up the phone and call, Winslow said. Use LinkedIn or whatever networking tool you have to reach out and say, ?Hey, have you really looked at this application? Tell them that youve reworked your original resume to show more accurately why youre the best candidate for the position and that youd like to reapply, but make sure you dont put anyone on the defensive by insinuating that they made a mistake.Where to restrain your tweakingWhen looking at a resume, recruite rs look to make sure that, if there are multiples, no significant data has been altered. To avoid appearing flaky at best and fraudulent at worst, keep the work history consistent, and dont change company names for which youve worked, titles youve held, education, or months and years at the companies. Bottom line Executive summaries and bulleted lists of key skills and achievements are the areas to tweak, not work-history sections. As long as those things in the work-history section stay the same, Winslow said, if you just change the resume format to something more usable and more applicable to the job description, theres nothing wrong with that, as long as you dont falsify information.Tiffani Murray is the manager of technology and metrics for the talent-acquisition department of a major beverage manufacturer. Murrays position includes managing the ATS for her large company, which uses the Peopleclick software application. Murrays advice for applicants who initially get rejected and who want to modify their resumes is to pay attention not only to the resume - make sure the keywords replicate the job posting, for example - but how the data is collected in the system. For example, some company career sites merely allow you to upload your resume, while others require users to fill in specific fields, such as job title or skills. In their rush to complete the online application, many applicants might skip over these and other fields with multiple selection boxes, she said. On the second attempt, Murray stresses the importance of applicants taking the time to fill in all of the information requested, even if its listed as optional. I recommend this because in many of the systems, these fields of information become searchable for the recruiters on the other side, she said. Fill it all in, even if information such as years of experience or degrees is listed on your resume. Its impossible to know when a recruiter might sort by this information to filter out applicant s, and filling in all fields will ensure you dont erroneously get caught in a screening filter.

Job Interview Dos and Donts for the Modern Job-Hopper

Job Interview Dos and Donts for the Modern Job-HopperJob Interview Dos and Donts for the Modern Job-HopperMillennials are more likely to change jobs than any generation before. In fact, 91 percent of workers born between 1991 and 1997 plan to stay in a job for less than three years, and the average 24-year-old today has already held 6.4 jobs. There are many valid reasons to change jobs a chance to learn a new skill, a sudden opening at the company of your dreams or even just a change of location. But with changing jobs every three years comes pressure to explain your background during job vorstellungsgesprchs. Unfortunately there are plenty of opportunities to make a mistake.Heres a look at seven important Dos and Donts for positioning yourself for a career change without jeopardizing your futureDoHave an online presence. You dont have to maintain a daily blog, but you should have a simple landing page that directs people to your LinkedIn profile and contains a brief personal statemen t and photo. Consider investing in a simple website platform such as WordPress or SquareSpace to increase your personal brand SEO.Craft an intentional social media presence. While your online presence is revealed in search results, your social media presence is very specific and can be more easily searchable. If you want a hiring manager to take you seriously online, your Twitter, Facebook, Google + and every other platform must be 100 percent professional or 100 percent private. We recommend professional.Include short jobs on your resume. If you have experience that relates directly to the position youre applying for, dont be afraid to include it on your resume. Consider adding a section of Seasonal employment practicums and list positions that lasted six months or less in one place.Consider freelancing. Over 53 million Americans currently freelance for their income. Now that the term is not commonly misused to cover unemployment, consider building your name, reputation and portfol io within your field by freelancing on the side. Pepper your interview with pertinent examples of your work experience and how your freelancing efforts helped you understand the job.DontSay youre Up for anything. Even if you have an array of different talents from taking on so many different jobs, its still important to present yourself as a professional with a specialty. The more sporadic your work history, the more consistent and professional your interview presentation needs to be. Lay that foundation by making firm statements about what kind of results you can provide, not how many different things youre willing to do on the job.Be vague about why youre leaving a job. Speaking of consistent and professional, your interviewer will know if youre lying or being evasive about why youre leaving a job. Make sure youre up front with a professional reason behind this career change and be honest about your passion for (and experience in) this new venture.Imply youll be on the move soon. Unless explicitly stated in a contract, your hiring manager cant expect you to stay onboard for a set number of years. However, that doesnt mean you should clear the air by disclosing how long you plan to stay with the company. Approach every new job as if it might be the one that you stay at forever. And should you find you need to move on in two to three years, you will be able to move on guilt-and-expectation-free.Its no longer a sound career plan to find a company and stick with it for 15 years. Younger workers are taking on jobs, learning valuable skills and moving onto the next one. Do so strategically, and youll build a network of jobs that dovetail into a stunning career.

Keeping It Real

Keeping It Real Keeping It Real Keeping It RealThe real-world aerodynamic performance of a vehicle can be better simulated in computer models such as SIMULIA than in wind tunnels. Image Dassault Systmes.Designing an automobile body is as much an artform as anything. On top of an underlying armature of metal and foam, a layer of clay is applied and shaped until the designer feels he has captured the essence of a sports car or SUV. The full-scale model is then sent to a wind tunnel to check the aerodynamic flow over the surface. One advantage, the modelers say, is speed and efficiency. Whereas it has taken hours to update a large computer-aided design model and rerun a computational fluid dynamics simulation, the clay model can be revised with a knife and the flick of a wrist. In the face of some entrenched resistance, however, new technology is improving on this methodand for good reason. Real-world road conditions provide different aerodynamic performance compared to wind tunnel testin g because of open-road wavering caused by cross winds, traffic, and other unsteady effects not seen in wind tunnels. And thanks to some recent advances in modeling and simulation software, models can be altered and simulations can be rerun very quickly or, in some cases, in real time. The current wave of digital transformation has produced a rapid expansion of engineering simulations across the entire product lifecycle, beginning with digital exploration, continuing to digital prototyping and then operations and maintenance. In addition, dramatic improvements have been made in various modeling and simulation technologies and facilities. These include the use of high-performance multicore and GPU processors, incorporation of AI and machine learning facilities, novel anwender interfaces, and new tools for better interaction and visualizing simulations. Thanks to unterstellung improvements, simulation software is more powerful than ever before, advancing across a number of different dimen sions. The models are more accurate, able to consider multiple physical forces in an integrated fashion to more closely represent real conditions and enable engineers to simulate entire ordnungsprinzips performance. Second, the combination of software and hardware has increased the speed at which these models operate. Thirdand related to speedmany of the applications enable engineers to explore models interactively and can respond to changes in real time. Finally, the software has become powerful enough and integrated with artificial intelligence that no longer does one need to be an expert to obtain superior results.Simulation software is now more pervasive and increasingly ingrained into the DNA of mainstream engineering. It provides engineers a faster, simpler way to explore and design digitally. And coupled with seamless and connected workflows with the core design tools in the market, simulation will enable engineers to make educated design decisions. At the moment, each of the l eading simulation vendors is pursuing a slightly different path. However, these differences illuminate the contours of what is on the horizon and point to the future of software-enhanced engineering.Interactive Interface One company that has seen a glimpse of the future is Wibotic, a maker of battery charging platforms for mobile robots and drones. The company was looking for a way to redesign the charging station to better dissipate the heat produced during charging. The design team turned to ANSYS Discovery, a suite of products that provides an interactive interface for manipulating geometry, materials types, or physics inputs, then instantaneously displaying changes in performance. In about 10 minutes, Wibotic engineers were able to analyze a completely new model and test thermal characteristics and airflow. The ability to simulate multiple design iterations in a short amount of time resulted in reduced prototyping costs, while the time saved was spent on other tasks related to pr oduct development, like usability, aesthetic design, and design for manufacturability, as well as shortening the time to market.ANSYS has optimized speed in its Discovery suitethe software takes advantage of the computational power of NVIDIA graphics processing units and CUDA, parallel GPU programming tools. According to the company, an engineer can start seeing simulation results in seconds after importing a geometry, with no need for a high-performance computing system, and can change the design and physics and immediately view the results. For instance, a user can apply a combustion force to a model of a piston cylinder and see the stresses throughout the entire 3-D volume of the enginein just seconds. In a single afternoon, an engineer can explore countless design options with near real-time feedback on structural, thermal, or fluids performance.Other new approaches in the ANSYS Discovery suite include tight coupling of simulation with geometric modeling, which allows for instan t modification and results update from a single graphical context, and new automated solver and discretization methods that make all decisions about time step, meshing, and convergence based on physics conditions and behavior without user interaction.Other software vendors are also looking to update their interfaces. COMSOL, the provider of an integrated software environment for creating physics-based models and simulation apps, has introduced the Application Builder for its multiphysics software. The Application Builder allows for customized user interfaces to multiphysics models as well as a means for communicating complex design ideas across multiple simulation and process departments. The goal is to allow app users to easily explore the outcomes of proposed designs. The potential for this feature is illustrated by work done by researchers at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry, England, to communicate their work into shaped metal deposition, an additive manufact uring technique where sheets of molten metal are slowly deposited, layer by layer, building up a surface in a process similar to welding. In SMD, thermal expansion can deform the cladding as it cools, so such deformations must be kept to a minimum.MTC built an app using the Application Builder available in COMSOL Multiphysics to allow users to experiment with the deposition process. Geometries, heat sources, materials, and deposition paths can all be altered using the app to test whether a viable end product is produced. The app allows an end user, who may be oblivious to the underlying model complexities, to test the system for specific customer needs and projects. Since MTCs modeling experts are not needed to run these simulations, their time is freed up, while end users can interact and thoroughly test the system to their satisfaction. In another advance in multiphysics simulation, COMSOL has introduced a hybrid boundary element method-finite element method technology that enables computation of acoustics and acoustic-structure interactions. With this new capability, users can analyze the full range of acoustic frequencies, from the lowest bass notes to ultrasound, while tying up fewer computing resources than running a finite-elements simulation alone. Along with this capability, users can also leverage all the possible multiphysics couplings available in the software.Multiscale Capabilities As mentioned earlier, automobile manufacturing can benefit tremendously from advanced simulation. As an alternative to wind-tunnel testing, for example, a detailed computer model of a vehicle can be placed in a SIMULIA PowerFlow computational fluid dynamics simulation. The simulation can virtually test and optimize designs against real-world scenariossome of which cannot be reproduced in a test chamber. SIMULIA is a part of Dassault Systmes and is available in the companys 3DEXPERIENCE suite of computer-aided design, 3-D digital mock-up, and product lifecycle management software. In addition to multiphysics, Dassaults applications boast multiscale capabilities, able to handle everything from atoms and molecules to airplanes and even large cities in a single simulation. That capacity can be seen in an automobile design simulation concerning electronic connections within and between cars.Todays cars contain an increasing number of electronic systems, all of which need to be connected either via cables or wirelessly. Many systems require antennas such as the navigation system, distance radar, keyless entry, or tire pressure monitors, just to name a few. There is a large variety of different antenna types, too window glass antennas for radio, rooftop antennas for communication and GPS positioning, and many other antennas for connectivity, either vehicle to vehicle or vehicle to the environment, including the connection of users mobile phone to the entertainment system. In addition, there are many antennas related to driving assistance or autonomous driv e systems such as the 77 Ghz long range distance radar. All together there are dozens of antennas in a car which need to be installed at the right positions. Ideally these antennas should be invisible and must not interfere with other antennas or electronic systems in the car.The ability to model multiple physical parameters over multiple scales enables Dassaults applications to examine very short wavelength waves over a large space within the car. This allows designers to ensure that there is enough space to place each antenna while positioning them in locations that are able to withstand small bumps and jolts. Additionally, the design must be mindful of the effects of sensors getting dirty or covered with water or ice, so the simulation must take air flow into account. The complex nature of products today that they are not purely mechanical but rather mechatronicis pushing multidiscipline simulation into the forefront of many applications. One software publisher, Siemens PLM, is add ressing the changing role of simulation by providing Simcenter, a complete portfolio of simulation and test solutions for the entire development cycle. For example, Simcenter provides full end-to-end durability testing, combining data collection and analytics into one single environment in its newly released Simcenter Testlab application. It covers every step of a typical test, from channel setup and measurements, to validation, consolidation, analysis, and reporting.Researchers at Siemens also are looking at several methods involving new approaches to grids and voxel-based analysis. The goal is to provide real-time solvers in high-dimensional design spaces that can generate both the design and the model for analysis, so that they can be used for the creative processes. The first step will be interactive cause-effect simulations for non-experts that would bring the simulation process into the initial design stages, but still require referral to high-end solvers and analysts for fina l verification. The analyses of these complex, high-dimensional design spaces would be presented either on a screen or through VR headsets. In addition to traditional 3-D models from CAD and CAE systems, Siemens is facilitating the creation of digital twinsdynamic virtual replications of products and physical assets such as factories or power plantsthrough a variety of other solutions in its portfolio. Among these solutions are Simcenter Amesim, a multi-domain platform for system-level modeling and analysis, including software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing Polarion, which manages complex configurations of embedded software through application lifecycle management and Teamcenter, the central repository and workflow engine for managing the requirements, functional, logical, and physical aspects of a product.Holistic System Simulations The use of digital twins and simulation models in production, operation, and service has been increasing in recent years. The consulting f irm Gartner predicts that half of large industrial companies will leverage digital twins by 2021, resulting in those organizations gaining a 10 percent improvement in effectiveness.Engineers have employed these dynamic detailed simulations to construct, evaluate, and validate designs in the product creation process, since they provide designers the ability to optimize deployments for peak efficiency and create other what-if scenarios. Unlike physical models, digital twins enable globally distributed, multidisciplinary teams the detailed information they need to evaluate opportunities and predict asset performance. In several industries the design verification and product creation process is moving away from a major reliance on physical testing to almost a full virtual simulation product verification process. That covers detecting and isolating faults, performing diagnostics and troubleshooting, recommending corrective action, determining the ideal maintenance schedule, optimizing ass et operation, and generating insights to improve the next generation of the product. Digital twins also have been used in model predictive control or simulation-based assist systems. Many major software vendors have embraced the demand for creating digital twins. ANSYS, to take one example, includes a feature in its latest releases that enables engineers to quickly build, validate, and deploy these digital representations of physical products. The creation of holistic system simulations via twin building is further supported by pres of those applications include flight control and engine control systems, landing gear systems, automatic pilots, fahrersitz displays, and emergency tracking systems. Together, those multifunction and multiscale simulations empower users to perform diagnostics and troubleshooting, determine the ideal maintenance programs, optimize the performance of each asset, and generate insightful data to improve the next generation of their products. The company estima tes that these digital twin features could cut maintenance costs by about 20 percent. The company is now working to develop means to create comprehensive and precise digital models of products and production operations to manage the complexity of future smart products and smart production operations. At Siemens, the digital twin is viewed in the context of the entire lifecyclea virtual representation of a physical product, its production processes, and its performance. For example, a digital twin is enhanced with mathematical models to enable electric motors to undergo something like a virtual X-ray A virtual sensor developed by Siemens researchers estimates the temperature of the motors interior, in real time, without the aid of a real physical sensor installed there. This information makes it possible to prevent unnecessary downtimesa change that can dramatically lower operating costs. And users of Dassault Systmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform can develop a digital twin to provide a virtua l representation of a product in order to better understand how it will be manufactured, delivered to market, and whether it can serve its users needs as it was designed. The goal is to optimize the entire value chain and increase both manufacturing and operational efficiency. The current trend of using simulation tools pervasively throughout the product design cycle as a proven, effective means of streamlining the product development process will accelerate over the next few years. The convergence, and synergistic coupling, of a number of disruptive technologiesincluding artificial intelligence, extended reality, novel human-technology interfaces, multicore and quantum computing, cognitive cyber-physical systems, and Big Data prescriptive analyticswill usher in a new era providing exponential acceleration of disruptive solutions to the most challenging digital exploration problems.Innovative organizations have to put in place processes to avoid the pain of transformation. They must rethink their strategies, retool their capabilities, and revitalize their workforce for stronger, longer-lasting success.AHMED K. The Day I Stepped Out of My Comfort Zone Is the Day My Career Really Started

The Day I Stepped Out of My Comfort Zone Is the Day My Career Really StartedThe Day I Stepped Out of My Comfort Zone Is the Day My Career Really StartedFor much of my young adult life, I struggled with crazy, irrational fear. More specifically A fear of speaking up. A fear of the awkward, stretched silences that inevitably followed the question, How about you, Joyce?- a question that hung in the air as my cheeks burned red and I scrambled to find words for the thoughts that, moments before, spun so clearly in my head. This fear followed me through the years, only growing deeper as I grew older.Around college time, I began to feel mildly claustrophobic in social situations. I gravitated toward the back of classrooms. I could handle small groups only- buffered by one or two of my close friends, I welches comfortable enough. Parties were doable, enjoyable even. But venturing out alone welches a no-go. The years slinked by as I became more and more adept at shying away from social experi ences and meeting new people. My social circle welches small, tight-knit, and that was just fine by me.Come graduation time, though, I hit a wall. I realized I had chosen a degree before figuring out what I wanted to do with my life.Did I really want to be a psychologist? Why did I get a psychology degree anyway? Who was I, four years ago with no professional experience, to think that psychology was the perfect career path for the rest of my adult life?I panicked.I realized I had lived most of my life in my comfort zone, a warm and cushy bubble where I could ride out the years without venturing into the strange and scary real world full of jobs and strangers.I Tried Switching Gears But Only Went HalfwayDeciding to get radical, I picked a graduate school in a city in which I had never lived a city where I had no friends. That was a good start toward getting out of my comfort zone, I figured. But the degree I chose? Human Resources Development. Why? Because I found job openings in tha t field and it seemed to fit with my background in psychology. Did I really want to do HR for the rest of my life? I figured if I got the degree, the answer would have to be yes, and anyway, the school looked nice enough.I essentially took getting radical halfway. I switched gears and tried a few new things, but I was still playing it safe by picking a degree based on job prospectsnot my real interests.About six months into the program, I knew it wasnt for me. I wasnt going to quit- I was committed to finish- so I kept my head down and completed the program with flying colors. Weakly proud of my on-paper success, I updated my resume and sent it out into the unknown. I eventually got a job offer, said yes, and buckled down for what ended up being, without a doubt, the worst job I ever had. Have you ever had a job where everything sounded great during the interview, and in reality it was a complete disaster? That was this job.I ultimately left and entered a period where I spun my whee ls, trying to figure out my life. I cycled in and out of job options and consulting opportunities, feeling shackled to my past choices, my degrees, my work history, and my fear of the unknown. I felt a constant strumming of fear and anxiety, and it didnt help that my support system was minute. I had made a grand total of one friend in the span of two years.I Decided to Break Up With My PastAt one point, sitting alone in my living room watching Love Actually for the umpteenth time, I chose to get radical againbut this time, I decided to go radical all the way. Have you heard the phrase if you want something youve never had, you have to try things youve never done? Well, I was ready for something I never had. I was ready to feel happy and fulfilled. It was time to push through my comfort zone so hard that it could explode and reform completely, creating an entirely new ecosystem within which I could exist. I committed to dramatically expanding my then-tiny network and finding a job tha t I actually wanted to do.I went on LinkedIn and made a short list of people I wanted to meet- complete strangers with intimidating job titles. I typed up introductory emails with clammy hands and a sinking stomach, feeling like a fraud. Who was I to take up this important persons time? I felt sick asking them to meet me for coffee. I was deeply uncomfortable every step of the way, from making the invite to attending the meeting itself.I now embrace that feeling of discomfort because I know that being pushed out of my comfort zone, and feeling that discomfort, is the key to enormous breakthroughs. As a result of those first nervous coffee dates, I propelled my mission into a grand scheme to meet with at least 100 business owners and executives one-on-one in a years time.I accomplished this and so much more.I Got Huge Results and BreakthroughsMy LinkedIn network rapidly grew by 800% with new (and, more importantly, authentic) connections. I attended over 20 networking events, six of which I would not have been able to attend without receiving a personal introduction from someone I had met, and 20 of which I would never have attended before I chose my challenge.Because of the relationships I developed, I secured a business executive position doing work that I love before the age of 30 (in a field completely unrelated to psychology or HR). And other, less measurable results included Greater confidence, lower anxiety, and increased feelings of self-worth. Those were perhaps the best results of all.It is no stretch of reality to say that pushing outside of my comfort zone caused extraordinary results in my life. Now, Its Your TurnWhat are your deepest fears? What would it be like if those fears were completely obliterated and you were unstoppable in achieving everything you want?It would be amazing, right?Heres how to start getting incredible resultsMake a short list of your fears.Identify an action step you can take to conquer each fear.Schedule time over the next week to take that action step.Do it No rescheduling, postponing, or excuses allowed.Editors note The original title of this article was The Day I Stopped Being an Introvert Is the Day My Career Really Started.
